Oil and birds - "you gotta keep 'em seperated"

Oil spills can wipe out whole bird populations, if they occur near important bird colonies. What makes oil so lethal to birds?

Environmental Research Institute (ERI) at the North Highland College of the Highland and Islands University is in charge of T4 Environmental Contamination and Ecological Impacts in APP4SEA. ERI studies the impacts of oil spills to seabirds and part of this work has been to define the oil vulnerability index (OVI) for seabirds found in the NPA region. ERI has mapped out the areas, where birds are most vulnerable for oil spills, both in breeding and non-breeding seasons. ERI has put together maps, which illustrate these areas, and the maps have been uploaded to APP4SEA's smart map (www.app4sea.com). Report about the OVI and how to use it will be published soon as will a report, which brings the hot spots of oil & gas extraction areas and shipping, and important seabird breeding areas, on the same map. But in the meantime, enjoy this "teaser" video from ERI about things to come...
